Community group the Mt Eden Village People has been granted $10,000 by the New Zealand Lottery board to help with its impressive planting projects – but needs more cash to meet its goals.

The Fruit Trees for Auckland project aims to help children gain a greater understanding of the importance of eating fresh fruit and locally sourced produce.

Last year it raised enough funds to supply schools, early childhood centres and 10 community groups with over 500 fruit trees for their grounds and local parks. Co-ordinator Judith Holtebrinck says over 150 schools and early childhood centres have now signed up with the project hoping to have fruit trees planted on their grounds, and the group needs more funding to reach them all.
