Make a hanging table

Get into the swing of outdoor living by making an upcycled suspended table. Stella and Dave Lennox of Lennox Woodcraft show us how it’s done.

Our simplest upcycling project yet! We were surprised at how easy this was to pull together. This table is perfect for indoors or out and if made with a little precision, it will work a treat.

We used an old off-cut of wood from the workshop and white rope left over from some sash windows we were building – but you can take a more rustic approach and use older materials for a more vintage look if you like – it’s up to you! This project is suitable for novice DIYers.

You’ll need

  • 1 piece of wood (square shape roughly measuring 40-60cm square)
  • rope (old or new – the length depends on where you will hang your table)
  • sandpaper
  • drill and a drill bit with a larger diameter than your rope
  • measuring tape and pencil
  • scissors

Your step-by-step guide

Step 1

Sand the edges of your wood to a nice smooth finish.

Step 2

Mark where you will drill the holes for your rope in each corner – we suggest measuring in 40mm from the edge of the wood.

Step 3

Drill out all four holes, BUT not right through to the other side of the wood. Before you do, turn the wood around and drill from underside – this will stop any wood breakout and give you a nice clean finish.

Step 4

Sand around each of the holes – both sides – to give a smooth finish.

Step 5

Cut your rope into four equal lengths – you decide how long you want them. This will be determined by where you hang your table, either from the ceiling or outside in a tree.

Step 6

Tie a knot at the end of each rope and thread it through the holes in your piece of wood. It’s very important to ensure your four lengths of rope are even, otherwise your table won’t hang evenly.

Step 7

Gather your four pieces of rope at the top and tie together in one big knot – pull tight. Your table is now ready to be hung! Either from a hook in the ceiling at home (be sure to have someone help you find a strong stud in the ceiling to hang it from) or outside from a tree.
