What I’ve been reading: Chernobyl, clouds, leaping fish, and NZ environment
Green Ideas editor Greg Roughan
This week I’ve been looking at pictures of nature’s amazing recovery around Chernobyl, watching this weirdly interesting 1960s animated film called Know Your Clouds, being impressed by this video of native New Zealand fish catching insects on the land (!), and catching up on the new state of the environment report.
- Ever wondered what the planet would be like without humans? Well you don’t have to – just look at these amazing photos from the area abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Sadly, they show that even a nuclear disaster isn’t as bad for wildlife as humans simply being around doing business as usual.
- If you’re a bit of a cloud geek, you need to watch this 1966 film by the US Army. Actually if you’re that much of a geek, you’ve probably already seen it. As you were.
- Did you know New Zealand freshwater fish can catch insects on the land? Neither did these researchers until they caught the behaviour on video.
- For the last eight years the Government has avoided publishing any proper figures on how our environment is doing. That’s set to change, however, with yearly environment reports to be published. You can read the first in-depth report here (caution: it contains some depressing figures).
