Random acts of gardening

Launching a new magazine has been hugely fun, and one of the best parts has been the feedback from you guys, our amazing readers. There’s a lot of passion and knowledge out there and we always love hearing your thoughts.
Another fun part of publishing this magazine is sharing all the great green ideas. My recent favourite was the sunflower tent in issue 5 – this is where you plant a circle of sunflowers on the lawn and tie them into a tepee for children to play in.
Last weekend my family got stuck into the garden and planted one for this summer which our one and-a-half year old daughter, Birdie, thought was brilliant. Afterwards we realised we had hundreds of sunflower seeds spare, so Birdie and I did a little guerrilla gardening in our neighbourhood.
We wandered hand in hand – in little gummies and big boots – with me lobbing handfuls of seeds into any garden that looked friendly enough to handle a little random flower action, and Birdie poking seeds carefully under each fence.
It was a great way to spend a sunny afternoon, and no one busted us on our covert mission – though I suspect the game will be up once the sunflowers sprout and the neighbours see who has a neat circle of blooms in their yard...
Oh well, the neighbours are a friendly bunch.
And speaking of friendly people, I think you lot will love our latest magazine. It’s packed full of great green – and as an added bonus we’ve got a cheeky coffee giveaway for you too. Each mag contains a coupon for a free coffee from Columbus Coffee cafés, which means that – with their coffee costing $4.80 and Green Ideas selling for $4.90 – you’re basically getting a whole magazine for 10 cents!
Hey, it might not be the most glamorous turning-one birthday present, but I can think of worse ways to treat yourself.
Enjoy!
