Tiri Tiri Matangi – a testament to the power of passion and commitmentReader submitted
If you'd like to see a truly wonderful example of conservation in action – and just what people can achieve when they put their hearts into it – I would highly recommend a day trip to Tiri Tiri Matangi. From a bracken-covered island that had been decimated by farming, it took 15 years and a group of dedicated and passionate volunteers who had a vision, and made that vision happen. This resulted in the planting of over 250,000 trees and the reintroduction of some of New Zealand's rarest native birds, and it's amazing to see and hear what New Zealand used to be like! When it was luscious and green and the air vibrated with birdsong!! It really is a FABULOUS day out. Be warned – Tiri Tiri Matangi can be a little bit addictive – you may just find you want to get involved, and become part of the Tiri Tiri Matangi family. You will be more than welcome. And when you see what was done on Tiri Tiri Matangi, you begin to get a taste of just what's possible for the WHOLE of New Zealand. Together, we really can replant mountains!!
