Five new proposed marine reserves would add 175 square kilometres to protected ocean
Conservation Minister Nick Smith has approved five new marine reserves for the West Coast of New Zealand.

All together, these five new marine reserves add 175 square kilometres to the almost 13,000 square kilometres of ocean already protected by this country. To complete the approval process the Minister of Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, and Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee must also give their consent.
