Kellogg's cleans up its palm oil
Green Ideas editorial team
It’s a ray of hope for critically endangered orang-utans: the giant global food company Kellogg’s has promised to source all of the palm oil used in its products from sustainable sources.
The announcement is being applauded as a show of consumer power, as the company had been under pressure from shoppers to clean up its act over the 50,000 tonnes of palm oil it uses annually.
Palm oil is one of the world’s most-used vegetable oils, and demand for it has led to the destruction of South East Asian rainforests to make room for palm plantations, which threatens the survival of animals such as the Sumatran tiger and the orang-utan.
The move by Kellogg’s has been widely praised and is set to ripple through the market, with other palm oil users forced to play catch-up.
