How many frogs do you see? If you can spot them all, you’re looking at three members of a species on the brink of extinction: there are perhaps only 500 armoured mistfrogs surviving today, with the entire population living in a single stream in northern Queensland.

With that location now under threat, efforts are being made to save the beautifully camouflaged Australian native. A conservation team recently caught 40 frogs and moved them to another, more secure location where it’s hoped a second breeding population will establish.

Kiwi biologist David Murphy, a graduate of the University of Canterbury currently working in Queensland, was part of the capture and relocation team and sent this picture to Green Ideas.

The frogs are thought to have been decimated by a fungal infection that is wiping out frogs worldwide.
