Conservation Volunteers

Hi, if you have a bit of spare time on your hands, and fancy doing your bit to keep New Zealand clean and green, Conservation Volunteers is always looking for volunteers. It may just be a beach clean-up, or a local replanting operation – but it is a great way to keep our place looking beautiful, and of course, meeting up with other like-minded, conservation loving individuals – that sounds like a win/win to me!

Oh, and that is a shot from Tiri Tiri Matangi – if you haven't been yet, do yourself a favour and GO! It's amazing to see and hear what New Zealand used to sound like, when it was luscious and green and the air vibrated with birdsong!! It really is a FABULOUS day out.

Or just go small and put an old native log in your backyard – not everyone suits the ferry ride.

Indeed one can plant a tree in their own back yard!! Though Tiri Tiri Matangi is a ferry ride, the Conservation Volunteers do lots of things here on the mainland, such as planting around local creeks, restoration of local parks etc... that was just my photo from Tiri! Conservation Volunteers welcomes people with a love of the outdoors and interest in the environment to get involved. Our volunteers include students, professionals, international visitors, retirees – in fact almost anybody can get involved. You don't need any prior skills or experience, just a reasonable level of health and fitness. You can just do one-off volunteer sessions or become a member – no ferry tummies required!!

Great to know how I can help get my son involved in conservation volunteering. He and I just had a discussion about how he would go about getting qualified to eventually be in paid employment with DOC (he's 12) as he's passionate about the environment. We'll definitely be looking in to it and what better country to be involved in it than our beautiful New Zealand!
