A ‘doomsday vault’ buried in the side of a frozen Norwegian mountain has received another 20,000 seeds, adding them to the 820,000 food crops already held at the secure site in Norway.
The Svalbard global seed vault, which cost $10 million to build and can house 4.5 million different seed varieties for centuries. It was built as insurance against an environmental catastrophe wiping out valuable food supplies. Its chambers hold rare and valuable species such as grains that are resistant to salty soils or drought.
The vault was designed to withstand rising sea levels, earthquakes and even nuclear war.
